Why a trailer?
People asked us for years why we didn't open a scoop shop. We thought about it for a long time, then took the plunge with something on wheels. The Wooden Spoon Trailer launched for Christmas 2019, and it has been one of our favourite ways to meet ice cream lovers ever since.
On any given day it might serve flavours from our signature range, dairy-free options, collaborations and seasonal specials.
What to expect
- A rotating list of flavours, usually including dairy-free options. Flavours change often, so check back.
- Hours that depend on the weather, because nobody wants a scoop in a southerly.
- A frequent-scoop card in past seasons: ask at the window.
This season
We announce opening dates, hours and flavours on Instagram and Facebook before the trailer rolls out each summer. Can't make it to the beach? See where to buy tubs or order a pack.
Events

Frequently asked questions
When is the Wooden Spoon trailer open?
The trailer is a summer thing and its hours depend on the weather. In past summers it opened Wednesday to Sunday, roughly 11am to 5pm, with holiday hours announced separately. We post each season's dates and any weather closures on Instagram, so check there before you go.
Where does the trailer park?
In past summers the trailer has parked at Lyall Bay in Wellington, in front of The Botanist café on Onepu Road, a short walk from the beach. If the spot changes for a season or an event, we will update this page and our Instagram.
Can I hire the trailer for an event?
We love a good event. In past years the trailer was not available for hire from December to February because of its summer spot, but other options such as a scoop freezer or party-size tubs were. Send us your date, location and guest numbers and we'll tell you what's possible.
